The dispute that followed the announcement of the result of that election by the Election Commission of Kenya (ECK) on 30th December, 2007 quickly degenerated into an unprecedented sevenweek long spate of violence in the Coast, Nairobi, Nyanza, Rift Valley and Western Provinces. The conflict led to an estimated loss of 1,200 lives, dislocation of about 301,000 people, destruction of property, heightened ethnic hatred and general destruction of social and economic life.
